Esplanade Lagoon

Officially open on 23rd March 2003 on a budget of $23.5AUD million to provide a safe space for swimming away from stingers and crocodiles

The lagoon is a 4,800 sqm filled with saltwater and ranges in depth from 32 inches to 5 feet.

​

Free fitness activities are offered on a regularar basis and the lagoon is often used for water fountain and light displays.

Cairns Cenotaph

The Sailors` and Soldiers` War Memorial is a clock tower surmounted by a statue of a `digger` which was erected in memory of the 142 fallen of World War One. The names of two women appear on the list of the fallen.

Originally the memorial had a 4-faced electric clock, which served as the town clock however the clock is now missing and clock dials have since been painted to represent 4.28am, the time of the original landing of the ANZAC`s on Gallipoli.

The memorial was the most costly World War One memorial in Queensland.

Botanical Gardens

Originally established in the mid 1880's by Eugene Fitzalan, and then developed by botanist Hugo Flecker in 1920's.  Flecker garden alone has over 3,000 species of plant life including local species that were used as food, medicine and weapons by local aborigines.  The gardens also include a Salt Water Lake, Fresh Water Lake, Bamboo Collection, Whitfield Walking Tracks, two cafes and and a visitors information centre.

A part of the Queensland Heritage Register on 2nd February 2007 to protect the original garden.

Today the gardens have over 100,000 visitors per year
